Meet the Secretariat Staff

The office of the Secretary-General looks after all administration, staffing, public and international relations, financial matters and information systems.

Natalia Ilieva
Head of SG's Office

Natalia is responsible for strategic development, members, external relations and marketing. She began her career in Bulgarian National Television and has since worked in the media for more than 20 years, including ten years in the BBC World Service. Natalia holds an MBA from the University of Ottawa, Canada and the University of Kent, UK. Prior to her ABU role she worked at Thomson Foundation, the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association, Forward, and the AIBD, where she oversaw the development of Gender Guidelines for Asia-Pacific broadcasters.

Chew Yoong Lian
Manager, Finance and Administration

Lian is Malaysian and began working with the ABU in 1998.

Nawaz Dookhee
Manager-Regulatory, Legal & IP Services

Nawaz acted for many years as litigation counsel on commercial and civil matters. Besides his active practice, he was concurrently the lead legal consultant for the Broadcasting regulator (IBA) in Mauritius where he advised on regulatory/commercial & competition matters. He was involved in drafting legislations/regulations and media guidelines, practice directions and advisory notes on behalf of IBA. Nawaz graduated from LSE for his LLB and LLM as well as Paris II University (Pantheon-Assas). He is a member of the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple. Although Nawaz joined physically in January 2016, he has been working very closely with the ABU Legal Division and the Secretariat since his recruitment in October 2015. His interests are in sports and content IP rights, new technologies and media.

Seemantani Sharma
Legal & IP Services Officer

Seemantani Sharma is an Intellectual Property Lawyer licensed to practice in India. Prior to joining the ABU, she worked in various legal capacities in the U.S. and India. Her last stint was at the George Washington University and the Recording Industry Association of America.

She holds a Master of Laws specialising in Intellectual Property from the George Washington University Law School.

Seemantani is an Indian and joined the ABU in June, 2016.

S. Nanda Armoogum
Manager, Public Affairs & Communications

S. Nanda Armoogum was Chief Editor and Director of News at the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation. He was also for 2 years, the Director of Broadcast Content at the Independent Broadcasting Authority in his country. He studied Journalism and Communications in London and France. Nanda also holds a degree in Law and an MBA from UK. He joined the ABU in February 2015.

Nitesh Chand
Finance & Administration Officer

Nitesh Chand is a Fijian national and joined the ABU in September 2016. He is a Chartered Accountant by profession and Member of the CPA of Australia. Nitesh also holds a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Arts Degree majoring in Accounting, Banking and Finance from the University of South Pacific. He worked for FIJI TELEVISION LTD (FTV) as Finance Manager for the last three years.

Zhanara Shalbayeva
Assistant to the Secretary-General

Zhanara Shalbayeva is a Kazakh national and joined ABU in September 2016. She previously worked as International Relations Manager for the National Broadcaster “Khabar Agency”, JSC and “Kazmedia” National TV and Radio Complex. Zhanara holds a Bachelor Degree in English from Kokshetau State University and in Economy and Business from “Bolashak” University in Kazakhstan.

Nadzim Zainal
Media Communications Designer

Apart from managing the contents of the ABU website, and designing ABU’s promotional materials, Nadzim is also official photographer. He also handles the layout of the quarterly ABU News and all other ABU publications. Nadzim, a Malaysian citizen, was previously a graphic designer/photographer for The Expat Group.

Faten Amira Binti Rahmat
Finance & Administration Officer

Faten Amira Binti Rahmat holds a Bachelor Degree in Accountancy from Universiti Utara Malaysia. She previously worked as Finance Executive for two years at Media Prima Berhad and was also an external auditor at Ernst & Young.

Faten is Malaysian and joined the ABU in February 2016.

Muhammad Farouk Md Alias
Accounts Assistant

Farouk, a Malaysian, joined the ABU in December 2014.

Kuamis Kimjun
Accounts Assistant

Ms Kuamis Kimjun is a Malaysian Citizen. She holds a Bachelor Degree in Economics, majoring in Finance from the Universiti Putra Malaysia. Ms Kuamis has over 10 years of experience in Administration and Accounting. She joined ABU in October 2015.

Administration Assistant

Shan, a Malaysian, joined the ABU in 1999.

ABU Technology

Dr Amal Punchihewa
Director, Technology & Innovation

Dr Amal holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) specializing in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, a Master of Electronics Engineering from Eindhoven, Netherlands, and PhD on evaluation of image and video compression frameworks. He has also completed post-graduate study in business management. He began his professional career in Sri Lanka, with the national broadcaster SLRC, then was senior lecturer in Engineering at the University of Moratuwa and returned to SLRC as Deputy Director General Engineering. In 2002 he joined the Institute of Information Sciences and Technology at Massey University in New Zealand as senior lecturer and researcher.

Ahmed Nadeem
Head of Studio Technology and Training

Nadeem is from the Maldives and was formerly with LSV Enterprise Pte Ltd. Singapore. He joined the ABU in 2008.

Nguyen Thanh Nam
Nam is Vietnamese and he joined the ABU in March 2013. Since 2003, he worked at the Broadcast Engineering Centre of the Radio Department of the Voice of Vietnam (VOV).

Nam graduated in Electronic & Telecommunication Engineering from Hanoi University of Science and Technology in 2003. He also completed an MBA in 2007.

Siva Kumar
Manager, IT Department

Siva is Malaysian. He is skilled in developing, implementing and supporting information systems and networking. He joined the ABU in January 2009.

Elanggo Soundaraju
Systems Support Officer

Elanggo is Malaysian, joined the ABU in September 2015.

Geraldine Peters

Geraldine is Malaysian. She joined the ABU in 1996.

Team Assistant 

Hamidah is Malaysian and joined the ABU in 2000.

Tatsuhiro Beniko
Director, ABU Programming

Mr Beniko, a Japanese national, joined the ABU in November, 2013.  Prior to his appointment as the Director of ABU Programming, Beniko was Senior Producer at Science Programs Division, Program Production Department and member of the Strategic Planning Division, International Planning and Broadcasting Department of the Japanese public broadcaster NHK.
Hanizah Hamzah
Head of TV

A Malaysian, Hanizah has worked for Radio Televisyen Malaysia as a radio producer and TV anchorwoman, as well as for NHK's Radio Japan. She joined the ABU in August 2006.

Vijay Sadhu
Head of Radio

Vijay had been working with All India Radio since 1980 and her last position there was Deputy Director in charge of the Nodal Network Station's programming, supervision and planning. She joined the ABU in 2005.

Olya Booyar
Head of Radio

Bornin Ukraine and educated in Canada, Olya began her career as an on-air broadcaster-journalist with SBS in Australia and rose rapidly through the organisation, before leaving to become Deputy Director of the countryąs national Classification Board. As well as working previously for the ABU, she has been a General Manager for the Australian Communications & Media Authority (ACMA) and most recently worked at the Australian Writersą Guild. She is a past-President of the global International Association of Women in Radio and Television (IAWRT).

Ko Young-Joon
Executive Programme Specialist

Ko Young-Joon was seconded to ABU Programming Department in January 2017 as Executive Programme Specialist. He used to work at the Educational Broadcasting System in South Korea for more than 15 years. Ko was a News Reporter and Producer and has produced lots of programmes covering various sectors such as Science, Environment, Family and Gender Equality.

Ko holds a BA in Arts & History and MA in Journalism from Yonsei University, Korea as well as an MSc in Engineering from KAIST, Korea.

Hamdhoon Rashad
Project Manager, New Media

Hamdhoon Rashad joined the ABU Programme Department in March 2016. He is a Maldivian and began his professional career with the state broadcaster Television Maldives (TVM) as a broadcast journalist. Hamdhoon has also been assigned to various mediums in different locations around the world including India, Malaysia and the US. Most recently he was working with the United Nations in Maldives as a Communication Analyst. He holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Broadcasting and Journalism from Malaysia.

Lai Kai Yan

Yan joined the ABU in February 2014 as Team Assistant in the Programme Department. Yan has a Bachelor of Sports Science from the University of Malaya and has worked in administration, promotions and retail before joining the ABU.  Yan is  Malaysian.

Qairunnisa Ahmad Noor Ridi
Team Assistant

Qairunnisa Ahmad Noor Ridi joined the ABU’s Programme Department as Team Assistant in March 2016. She is a graduate in International Relations with French from Nottingham University, Malaysia Campus. Nisa is Malaysian.

ABU Sports

Yangjiang Cai
Director, ABU Sports Department

Yangjiang was from CCTV where he was Senior Producer of the CCTV sports channel. He graduated from the China Central Academy of Drama with a Masters degree in Film and Television theory. Yangjiang joined the ABU in July 2012.

Jo Hae-dal
Senior Producer

Jo Hae-dal joined ABU in April 2016 as Senior Producer in the Sports Department. As Chief Producer & Director at KBS-Korea, he has a rich background of knowledge in sporting events production and management. He has been in the field for more than two decades and played a key role as a planning producer for the host broadcasting service for the 2011 IAAF World Championship in Daegu. Jo holds a BA English from Kyungpook National University and a MA Journalism & PR from Sejong University in Korea.

Senior Project Manager

Kesang joined the ABU from BBS Bhutan in July 2014. Prior to the ABU, he worked as the Head/General Manager of the News Channel at BBS. Kesang has extensive experience in news and production having started his career in broadcast media as a news reporter in 1994. He has worked in various capacities both in News and Programming at BBS, including planning and execution of broadcast development activities, expansion and diversification of content production as well as coverage of many important national and international sporting events. 

Nur Jalilah

Nur Jalilah joined the ABU in January 2015. She is a Malaysian national who graduated from University of Malaya with a Bachelor Degree in Sports Science, majoring in Sports Management. Prior to the ABU she worked at the Malaysian Airlines contact centre and assisted at the Asian Football Confederation.

Il Chae
Director, ABU News

Chae, a Korean national, joined the ABU in January 2015. Previously, he was a Deputy Director of the Foreign Affairs and National Security News Team at KBS

Tan Hock Guan
Senior Editor

Hock Guan is Malaysian and is in charge of the daily coordination of the news exchange. He joined Asiavision in 2001 and was appointed Senior Editor in 2006.

Nhishaeni Parmanadan
Asiavision Coordinator

A Malaysian, Nisha was a journalist with Bernama Radio24, before she joined the ABU in March 2011.

Joanne Kim Kyung Hyun
Project Officer

Ms Joanne Kim Kyung Hyun joined ABU in October 2015 as Asiavision Coordinator. She is a Korean citizen and has been living in Malaysia for the past 13 years. She is a graduate from the London School of Economics and Science UK.

Shabana Jan

Shabana joined the ABU in April 2012.  In her previous roles Shabana worked in tourism, travel, sports and retail. She is a Malaysian.
